Goal.com has it that Real Madrid and Benfica have agreed on a fee for Coentrao. The only hurdle so to say is now the contract between Real Madrid and Fabio Coentrao. This has never been a problem at Real Madrid so if the reports are to be believed then we, the Real Madrid fans, have got ourselves another fullback to cheer alongside Marcelo.
Talking about Marcelo. Should we not question the motivation behind this transfer? I mean, Real Madrid already has the magical Marcelo (after last season, yes he is magical) on the left. We have Arbeloa as his cover on the left. So why pay 22 million euros for another player who is more of a carbon copy of Marcelo.
Yes. Coentrao is attacking. He attacks. He was a midfielder a couple of years ago, more of a winger but then pushed back himself to a left back position. Which means that his defensive skills would be questionable, just as the case was and pretty much is with Marcelo.
I think Real Madrid should be looking for a central defender rather than someone on the wings, we have plenty of players in those positions. I think, given that Real Madrid only want to sign a defender this summer then John Terry or Thiago Silva would be the ones I would be target.
