There has been a lot of talk about Mourinho wanting to sign a right back instead of a center back (which I believe we should) and then put Sergio Ramos in the center with someone new on the right.

There has been a host of players being linked to Real Madrid which is always the case, no surprises there. Top name is Maicon, though I would love Real Madrid to consider Bosingwa as well. What Real Madrid really need is a left back. Lahm would have been a good choice or Fillipe Luis, who I think is far better than both Marceloa and Arbeloa.

Anyway, here is why I think it would not be in Real Madrid’s best interest to have Sergio Ramos as a center back instead of a right back:

  1. He would not have the space to showcase and unleash his creativity which has helped Real Madrid time and time again, especially in away games where Sergio Ramos does a trick or two, bombs down the right and puts in those menacing crosses like hell. If he is put to center back position then obviously that would not be possible, even it is possible then he would not be allowed to do that often.
  2. By having him as the right back, we would get an added advantage of a right back being good in the air which is a rarity I think. That would give us some more strength while defending air balls. Sign a  quality center back, Lucio would be my choice and let Ramos play on the right. He is good in one on one situations something which is also not very common in wing backs.
  3. Sergio Ramos I feel though can perform really well as a center back but I feel does have the temperament of a center back who is required to be patient and comfortable with the fact that he cannot win every ball. Sergio Ramos tries to win every ball which leads to him committing stupid fouls, often gets him sent off. Now that is a little acceptable if he is a right back, that is, fouls and the subsequent free kicks would be further away from the goal but if he does that as a center back then Real Madrid can prepare themselves for a barrage of direct free kick goals.

Sergio Ramos tackling ability is good but not perfect, he goes into a challenge way too quickly and because he likes to attack a lot, he sometimes gets caught off guard. Has a habit of making wayward passes which as a center back can be really damaging, as a right back, there is room to recover.

So this is why I think he should play as a right back and Real Madrid can spend some money on a quality center back. Subotic is another tall defender that comes to mind. Chelsea outcast Alex in my opinion can be a good buy as well. Vidic, is also a possibility.

Anyway, what do you guys think, should Real Madrid by a center back or a right back? Which one is needed? We should not really disturb the mentality Sergio Ramos has playing as a right back.
