Schuster’s Disappointments This Summer

Schuster’s Disappointments This Summer

Well, I knew something was not going right for Real Madrid this transfer period as Real Madrid did not make ONE, quality signing apart from Van Der Vaart may be. As it turns out, Schuster did not want Van Der Vaart this season for the amount of money Real Madrid payed for him and deep down, I know Schuster is very very disappointed with Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon for letting Robinho go and worst of all, Calderon did not find a replacement for Robinho which I think is going to cost Real Madrid a lot this seasons.

Lets hope Real Madrid come out of this season with some positives. As Champions League is going to be even tougher as Juventus and Real Madrid are in the same group. Real Madrid have not gone past the round of 16 for the past 4 seasons and that just sucks.

Anyway, Coming back to Schuster.

Reports say that Rafael van der Vaart was never a priority signing for Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster, it has been revealed.

AS says Schuster told Real sports director Pedja Mijatovic he was happy to wait until next summer to land the former Hamburg star – for just £750,000.

However, with Wesley Sneijder breaking down in preseason, Real were forced into pushing through a £9 million deal for Van der Vaart.

None of Bernd Schuster’s requested signings were clinched by Real Madrid over the summer, let alone the disappointment on signing Van der Vaart.

AS says Schuster submitted a wish-list to Real president Ramon Calderon and sports director Pedja Mijatovic, which included having Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo well down at fourth-choice.

I have to say that I expected this from Schuster when I first heard that Real Madrid wanted to Cristiano. And I was going like crazy as to why in the holy world Real Madrid want to pay a 100 million for C.Ronaldo. I do not want to start this Cristiano thing again so I am going to leave it at that.

Schuster made it clear he wanted a striker and had

Luis Fabiano (Sevilla): Ok, let me start of by saying that I am glad Real Madrid did not sign him. If Schuster wanted to sign him purely and I do mean, purely as a substitute then it would have been a good buy, but the amount of money Sevilla asked for him was ridiculous, so I think Real Madrid made the right choice in passing this deal.

Fabino is a OK player, nothing special and I think Real Madrid did need something special in the striking department this season as I think Raul and Van Nistelrooy will not be able to perform consistently on a high level. Luis Fabiano for me is an over rated player.

Yeah he can finish with extreme ease but the problem is, he is not like “A Messi”, by that I do not mean that he doesnt play like Messi (ofcourse, no one plays like Messi), what it means is that, he has little to no, individual skill. He needs service to do something with the ball and I do not think that a club as big as Real Madrid want a player of his skills for that price in their ranks.

David Villa (Valencia): PASS. I do not like players like David Villa again the prime reason being the price tag for Villa. Ok, he has a good touch and works hard. Finish is also up to the standard, but he is also a player who thrives on service. Don’t get me wrong, I know Van Nistelrooy and Henry also require service to score goals. Yes they do, but when it does not happen, then they do something special. They create opportunities out of thin air. That is what I think Real Marid should have been looking for.

MY CHOICES: Adriano, Benzema or Huntelaar

He also wanted a creative midfielder from:

Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal): PASS. Yeah PASS. I know how well Fabregas has performed for Real Madrid. But the problem with him is the same as with David Villa. I mean, seriously. How many times have we seen Fabregas on a solo run like Kaka, or Ronaldinho, so why pay the crazy sum for a player who’s only speciality is passing.

Though passing is the fundamental part of football, but at Real Madrid, we want players who can come up with some magic when the team is under some pressure. Fabregas cannot take free kicks, cannot be relied upon to score long range scores (though he scored one against Milan in last years Champions League at the away leg match), he does not have strength on which he can rely on. Quaresma, though has great skill with the ball, occasionally uses his brute strength to shrug off defenders.

To sum up, Fabregas is really a one dimensional player like Rafael Nadal of tennis. They both do one or two things extremely well, whereas Kaka or Ronaldinho is like Roger Federer (who has just won the US Open 2008 by beating Andy Murray, I hate federer though, that lucky punk), they all do all the things right and have plenty of options in their hands once they get the ball.

Diego (Werder Bremen): YES. Diego is a player who impressed me a lot, specially with his touch and passing ability. The guy is one year younger than Robinho (not that Fabregas is old or something), but Diego has got it all, except may be some speed and defensive qualities, but who wants defending from a player who attacks so well.

Diego was my favorite and I really wanted Real Madrid to consider him as a potential target. The only good thing is that, he has not been snapped up by any other European Club. Diego’s match against Real Madrid in Champions League, really put him on the map as the most talented players on the planet.

But I usually do not watch Bundesliga that often. So there must be something about Diego that the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea or Barcelona have not signed him yet. But then again, Quaresma is a very talented player too and nobody wanted to sign him until Mourinho came to Inter Milan.

plus a ball-winner:

Daniele de Rossi (Roma) his top choice: Now, why would Schuster want another ball-winner. We have in Diarra one of the best defensive midifielder’s in the game and in Gago, we have the next big thing in football. I think Gago has awesome potential as he is so much mature than any of his peers of his age. I think Gago just needs to work on his attacking side a little bit to become like a Gerrard or something.

De Rossi, is a very good player. But whenever I have seen him play in a big match or a match where there is much expected of him, he cracks. He cannot handle the pressure and for this reason alone, I think Real Madrid should just pass this one too.

No doubt De Rossi can do everything on the pitch. He can defend very well, he has good pace for a midfielder, he can attack, take free kicks and has strength. But, that is the difference between Messi and Ronaldo. Messi brings out his best when the team needs it, on the big stage. Whereas Ronaldo cracks under presure. Though there has been remarked improvement in Ronaldo’s composure over the last year or so.

Still unconvinced by his fullbacks, Schuster also has:

Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich): would have been a great buy. First, as he is German, so unlike Brazillians, they do not have bad attitude problems. Though every player on the planet has attitude problems on some level or another, but brazillians play with a lot of skill and a lot of fun. And you cannot have FUN at one club for like a decade or something. That is why to motivate themselves, Brazillian players, mostly change clubs at a rapid pace,so that they could keep enjoying what they do to make a living rather than being a soldier like Raul.

Lahm, is also a very very talented and very very agressive player. He can attack like hell and is what you call a SPEED DEMON. Though due to his height and overall stature, his air ball defensive abilites can be questioned, but he understands the game very well. The most important thing that makes Lahm such a good and vital player for any team is that, no one in current football can run him out of the game. I mean, we all see wing backs eating dust when they come up against someone like Messi. Lahm is not one of those wingbacks, not to mention his amazing and efficient tackling abilities too.

He was a must buy, but considering that we already have Marcelo and Heinze for that position, I would have first checked his price tag.

Daniel Alves (Barcelona):

Chelsea, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United – these are just some of the clubs that have queued up for him over the last 18 months or so. However, it is Barcelona who land him after some difficult negotiations with Sevilla. Perhaps a touch overpriced at 30 million euros  but then again, he is the best attacking full-back this world has seen since Roberto Carlos. Though I am sure Sergio Ramos would want to say something on that. But still I think he was also a must buy so that Sergio Ramos could move in the central defensieve duties.

Daniel Alves main triats are his never ending stamina, his will, his speed, passing and dribbling. All in all, someone very close to a complete right back just as Sergio Ramos is.

Apart from the striker’s options. The rest of the players are exactly what I wanted Real Madrid to buy (Daniel Alves, Lahm and Diego)
