Its been a long while since Real Madrid has won its favorite trophy and yes i am talking about the Champions league which Real Madrid has won a staggering 9 times. No other club in the world has been able to achieve this feat, AC Milan has come the closest with 7. I think this year is going to be no different for Real Madrid as far as Champions League is concerned and i have a very legitimate reason for it. Basically to win the Champions League any team requires a good defense and though Real Madrid have good individuals for this job, the main problem is that they do not work as a team.
If you look at all the past winners of the Champions League such as AC Milan and Liverpool, both had wonderful defenses whilst this is not true in all the cases as Barcelona also won it with great flare but even then, I think the key to Barcelona’s success was due to its wonderful defense lead by Carlos Puyol.Anyway, this year everyone has seen what Real Madrid can do in the attacking part of the pitch but their Achilles heel is their defense. With the exception of Pepe none is able to handle the air balls well even against sides as modest as Villarreal and some other clubs which i won’t mention.
The goals conceded by Real Madrid against Lazio and Werder Bremen were appalling and our World Player Of The Year 2006-2007 was seen embarrassed by some unknown striker of which i can’t even remember the name of. I think Real Madrid should buy some big players this January and by big i do not mean big name players but physically big players, both defenders and a attacker because without Van Nistelrooy Real Madrid does not look half a side as they are with him. I would suggest players like Mertsacker, Kolo Toure of Arsenal and Adriano of Inter Milan.
